In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted just about 300km away from the Canadian border in BC, becoming the most destructive volcano in US history. This volcano wiped out entire forests when lahars (glacier ice mixed with ash) from the mountaintop rushed down the mountain, caused major traffic accidents due to bad visibility from ashfall, houses, bridges, and vehicles were damaged by flooding and/or flowing debris, and boats on rivers near the mountain were stranded because of the lahar and debris clogging up the rivers. The loss of 57 lives, economic decrease, and mass private and public property damage were all part of the destruction caused by Mount St. Helens, the event that will be remembered for many years to come.
